Myth. Although a flotation device can keep a child afloat, it cannot substitute supervision. Flotation devices cannot prevent accidents, especially if the flotation device tips or the child tries to remove it. Only a person can recognize and respond to danger.
Fact. Every year in California, 75 families lose a child to drowning.
Myth. Although having an adult on hand is helpful, the adult needs to be completely focused on the pool in order for it to be safe to swim. It only takes 20 seconds for drowning to occur.
Myth. Although knowing how to swim helps, accidents and medical emergencies happen all the time. Even experienced swimmers can drown.
